Hero of the Month: Vinny Cherry

Mr. Vinny Cherry was recognized as the Hero of the Month for Dauphin County Heroes Grove. Vinny Cherry is a 2012 graduate of Mount St. Mary’s University, with a BA in philosophy and a minor in theology. He will be entering nursing school in June 2013 with plans to become a nurse anesthetist. Vinny is the founder of Vinny’s Kids, Inc., a 501(c)(3) charity established in 2004 when he was 14 years old. Inspired by his own experience while hospitalized at age 7, Vinny hoped to make the hospital experience less stressful for young patients. Since its creation, Vinny’s Kids has provided close to one million dollars in entertainment for hospitalized, terminally and chronically ill children. The charity has developed a Vinny’s Kids Activities Room at both the Pinnacle Health Harrisburg Hospita...l and the Penn State Hershey Rehab Hospital. It also supports a network of camps for children with specialized medical needs, providing entertainment, camp tuition and the stipend for a full time arts and crafts director. Vinny maintains a hands-on role by visiting patients, delivering toys, interacting with campers, and organizing the VK5K Race for Vinny’s Kids. The annual event draws more than 600 participants and raises more than $40,000 to support the charity’s outreach efforts. Vinny was a member of the Mount’s Division I track and cross country team, the recipient of the Mt. Saint Mary’s Dean Scholarship 2008-2012, the 2009 Everyday Heroes Award (Mid-Penn Bank), the 2012 Msgr. George D. Mulcahy Memorial Prize for Distinguished Service to the Larger Community, and was named the 2012 Outstanding Role Model for Kids by the United Methodist Home.
